What is the Belimo Energy Valve?

The Belimo Energy Valve™ (EV) is an intelligent pressure independent control valve for HVAC applications. It is based on the Belimo Characterized Control Valve (CCV) technology that delivers zero percent leakage. The flow through the valve is measured with an ultrasonic flow sensor. The sensor provides accurate and reliable measurement and control equipped with a patented glycol algorithm that compensates to ensure accurate readings. The Energy Valve compensates for any pressure fluctuation in the system electronically. Combine temperature sensors in the supply and return pipe to measure the energy supplied to a coil. The Energy Valve also has a patented built-in Power Control and Belimo Delta T Manager™ logic to monitor coil performance and optimize the heat exchange by maintaining delta T. In addition to the standard analog control signal DDC and feedback wiring, the Energy Valve communicates its data to the Building Management System (BMS) via BACnet or Modbus communication. The built-in web server makes the Energy Valve easy to configure and enables clear visualization of the valves' operation in real-time. Performance data is available for 13 months and a lifetime on the Belimo Cloud.

Features and Benefits

Compensates Pressure Electronically
The flow meter and advanced high-performance actuator enable the Energy Valve to provide the required flow using feedback from a flow meter without a traditional pressure independent cartridge. The Energy Valve senses pressure and flow changes. It reacts to pressure changes by moving the valve until the correct flow is achieved. It remains there until another significant pressure change occurs or a change in flow is required.

Energy Monitoring
An integrated energy meter provides accurate coil and energy consumption data for tenant billing. The data is used to verify system performance after commissioning and acts as a baseline. This feature helps achieve LEED points through Energy and Atmosphere within credits 1 and 5.

Glycol Measurement and Compensation
Glycol monitoring utilizes an embedded temperature sensor, ultrasonic technology, and a patented glycol algorithm to monitor and compensate the percentage of glycol content in the system. Glycol monitoring and compensation optimize heat transfer and pumping efficiency while reducing operating costs and the risk of freezing.

Power Control
The Energy Valve cannot only measure energy but also control it. Power Control is a complete departure from traditional valve characteristics; the control signal DDC is interpreted as a power requirement; this makes the valve control independent of pressure, water temperatures, and air volumes.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)
The device can connect with one standard Ethernet cable that provides power and allows data transmission.

Belimo Delta T Manager™
The formula for heat exchange is exact; the reality of the buildings' operation is far from accurate. The quest for occupant comfort has made modulating control valves and varying airflow a reality. However, this turns optimum heat exchange into a moving target, as ideal air volume and water flow rates are interdependent and non-linear. The temperature spread between water entering and leaving a heat exchanger is called Delta T. This measurement is the amount of energy is used to pass the water through the heat exchanger. Low delta T is when the heat exchanger receives too much water. The Energy Valve eliminates overflow by slowing the water down until the heat exchanger gives up the desired energy. Reducing flow rates to optimize the heat exchange significantly affects the pumps and the plant.

The Belimo Delta T Manager reduces pumping and chiller/boiler operating costs by increasing plant efficiency and maintaining the design Delta T. The built-in logic monitors coil performance and optimizes the available energy of the coil by maintaining the Delta T.

Digital Ready
In addition to the standard analog control signal DDC and feedback wiring, the Energy Valve can communicate its data to the Building Management System (BMS) via BACnet or Modbus communication. The built-in web server makes it easy to configure and visualize the valves' operation in real-time. Performance data is available for 13 months on the actuator and a lifetime on the Belimo Cloud.
